The Debt in the Gift

She gave you somewhere to belong. Then she started charging you for it.

“An energetic debt that they didn’t even know they signed.”

1. The day she saw him show up

Hey, Emperor. Sit with me for a moment.

At 57:35–59:51, I speak directly to the woman in this reading. I talk about the father she felt abandoned by and the moment she saw him give love somewhere else. That’s where I want to start, because you can spend years telling yourself somebody just didn’t know how to show up. Then you watch them do it for somebody else.

Now you have a different question. If you knew how to do that, what the fuck happened when it was my turn?

I say in the reading that other people showed her what fatherhood could look like. She could be grateful for every one of them and still want him. You can have love in your life and still grieve the love you wanted from one particular person.

But, girl, you kept looking at the person he showed up for. What did she have to do with the years you spent waiting? You wanted an answer from him, and somewhere along the way you started acting like you could collect it from her.

That’s the dark wound I’m reading. Years later, you can spot somebody who’s desperate to feel chosen from across the room. You know exactly what to say because you remember the sentence you were waiting to hear. You let them in. You make them feel like they finally have somewhere to go. Then the first time they choose something for themselves, you remind them how easily you could take that place away.

Emperor, watch that turn. She knows how to make the outcast feel chosen because she remembers exactly how it felt to wait. The question is what she expects them to give up once she’s the one who gets to open the door.
